Keeping Real-Time Passenger Information on Schedule in Ulm
December 2018 | Ulm, Germany
In summer 2018, Ulm was preparing to open its new Line 2 tram service in December. The plan called for real-time passenger information displays at every stop.
A delivery problem put that goal at risk. The computers originally intended to connect the displays directly to Stadtwerke Ulm's existing ITCS infrastructure had a delivery time of more than six months. Without another solution, the displays would not be operational for the opening.
Luminator proposed using a Luminator data hub that had already been operating for several years as an alternative source for the required real-time data. This allowed information to reach the displays without waiting for the delayed computers.
Luminator provided the required hardware and software and supported planning, civil engineering and installation. The result documented by the case study was straightforward: the display systems were commissioned on schedule.
SWU subsequently gave Luminator the opportunity to provide displays for the rest of the network. Today, according to the existing case study, all Stadtwerke Ulm real-time passenger information displays come from Luminator.
The project includes 148 outdoor LED displays serving Tram Lines 1 and 2.
