Keeping Austin Passengers Informed and Safe Through Rapid Service Changes
July 2019 | Austin, TX
When the COVID-19 pandemic reached the United States, Capital Metro faced major changes to its operations. Almost all timetables had to be changed while many passengers, including essential workers, continued to depend on public transportation.
Capital Metro used Luminator technology to provide passengers with current information as service changed. Real-time e-paper displays could be updated remotely and provided e-reader and accessible audio functionality. Their low power requirements also supported energy-efficient solar operation.
The solution combined solar-powered e-paper displays with cloud and back-office software and onsite support. The displays were deployed at bus stops and rail stations, with e-paper panels later added at park-and-ride locations.
The case study also states that Luminator onboard video security solutions were used to help monitor passenger safety distancing during the pandemic.
The documented result was the ability for Capital Metro to quickly and comprehensively inform passengers about constantly changing service using e-paper systems designed to be easy to manage and configure.
At the time of the case study, the deployment included 185 e-paper displays.
